BELFAST’S August Bank holiday weekend is synonymous with the Belfast Mela, when thousands of visitors come together to revel in a unique carnival of global cultures.

This year Belfast Mela is going virtual and organisers have launched a creative storytelling competition to find three stories to turn into short animations for their Mela at Home programme, running from August 24-30.

The competition, aimed at exploring themes of diversity and identity, is open to all age groups and all types of storytelling including creative writing, poetry, oral storytelling or even drawings.

Three overall winners (Under 11s, 11-17 and 18 plus) will be selected to have their pieces professionally animated into a series of cartoon shorts.

The initiative is part of ArtsEkta’s World of Words programme which aims to bring the best of international storytelling to Northern Ireland.

Written submissions should not exceed one A4 page for under-18s and two A4 pages for over-18s. The deadline is July 30. Full terms and conditions for the competition can be found at artsekta.org.uk/world-of-words.
