SIX sides will battle it out for three of the four open Sigerson Cup quarter-final places on Tuesday evening.
The live stream will be the Munster Technological University derby between MTU Cork and MTU Kerry, the former Cork IT and Tralee IT respectively.
Another tight tussle is on the cards when University of Limerick host their counterparts from Galway, while DCU will be favoured to make home advantage count against ATU Sligo.
The MTU Kerry outfit caused probably the shock of round 2, ousting UCC in their losers’ clash, with a 2-15 to 2-8 victory. Now they travel to take on the other Cork side, MTU Cork, who lost out in round 2A, the winners’ section, going down at home against TUS Midlands by 1-12 to 0-17.
MTU Cork’s opening win away to ATU Donegal was also put into perspective in the second round when the Tir Chonaill team were destroyed by Maynooth, going down by 30 points, 5-20 to 0-5.
In contrast, Limerick lost out by the narrowest margin to holders Ulster University last week, 1-10 to 1-9, on neutral ground at Abbotstown, Dublin.
On home ground they will fancy their chances, but will know they must be wary of unpredictable opponents. Galway scored just five points in their opening defeat against TU Dublin (0-8 to 0-5), but then absolutely destroyed Queen’s in their round 2B clash – 4-15 to 0-4.
The westerners only led by five at half-time in Templeport, Cavan, but cut loose in the second half. Full-back Cian Hernon got forward for not one but two goals, to add to an earlier long range point, and their other goals came from Ruadhri Fallon and Cillian Ó Curraoin.
DCU were edged out in their Dublin derby against UCD, 1-11 to 1-10, and have the quality to dispose of ATU Sligo, who squeezed through the 2B match against ATU Galway by 1-14 to 1-13.
Already through to the last eight are the four round 2A winners: holders Ulster University, UCD, TU Dublin, and TUS Midlands.
