Work is set to commence on the new £150 million business park in Antrim within weeks.

Errigal Group’s proposal for the redevelopment of the Enkalon Business Park was officially granted approval by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s planning committee on Monday evening.

The construction firm, which bought the 70 acre site in 2019, said the project will result in around 700 new jobs, potentially rising to 1,000 once fully operational.

Errigal’s plans involve three new storage and distribution warehouses, five new light industrial units, two new retail showrooms, new research and design offices and the refurbishment of and alterations to four existing storage and distribution units.

In the region of 945,000 sq ft of new build floor space will be created, with 835,000 sq ft of existing space refurbished.

Headquartered in Killybrone in Co Monaghan, close to the border with Tyrone, Errigal is headed by Damian Treanor and Derry native Cormac McCloskey.

Mr McCloskey said the company has already completed over £2m of improvement works at the site since 2019.

He expects works at the business park, located next to The Junction retail park, to commence in the next number of weeks.

“This planning permission will be transformational for the existing business park and the surrounding lands,” he said.

“Since lodging the PAN [proposal of application notice] with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in early 2023, we have been strongly encouraged by our engagement with both elected representatives and council officials regarding this incredibly significant application for the Antrim area.

“Following the news breaking of our intentions for the business park, we have been very pleased with the interest from businesses enquiring about space at the site, and we are looking forward to these plans fully developing now we have secured planning permission,” added the Derry man.

“We express our thanks to the design team of this scheme led by TSA Planning, RPS and Alan Bennett Architects.”
