Post mortem due after man dies at diving event in Co Donegal

Two men were recovered from the water at the North West Dive Rally near Killybegs on Saturday, with one pronounced dead at the scene and the other hospitalised

A post mortem is due to be carried out following the death of a diver in his 40s at an event in Co Donegal on Saturday.

It was reported the man in his 40s died during the North West Dive Rally in Teelin Pier, west of Killybegs.

Another man in his 60s is also remaining in hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

The rescue effort had involved the Killybegs Coast Guard and an Irish Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter, and the event was cancelled on Sunday.



A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí received a request for assistance form the Coastguard following an incident in Teelin Bay, Co Donegal on Saturday afternoon, June 22.

“The incident occurred at around 12.30pm. Two men were recovered from the water. One of these males, a man in his 40s, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem will take place in the coming days.

“The second man, aged in his 60s, is receiving treatment at University Hospital Galway.”

Among those sharing their condolences from the diving community was Newry & Mourne Sub Aqua Club.

“Our thoughts are also with his dive buddy and the entire diving team during this incredibly difficult time,” the group posted online.

“We commend the Donegal Bay Sub Aqua Club Search & Recovery and the Killybegs Coast Guard for their their swift and courageous rescue efforts. Your professionalism and dedication are deeply appreciated. May he rest in peace”

A spokesperson from the North West Dive Rally told the Irish News on Sunday they did not wish to comment.
