Police have confirmed a 56-year-old Co Tyrone man has died nearly a month after he was critically injured in a road traffic collision.

Sean McGaughey, from the Omagh area, was driving a van in the town when it was involved in a collision with a car just days before Christmas.

The accident happened on the Drumnakilly Road.

Inspector Cherith Adair, of the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said the road collision happened shortly before 8.40pm on Sunday December 22.

“Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and two men were taken to hospital for treatment,” she said,

Inspector Adair added: “Very sadly Mr McGaughey, who was the driver of the van, later died in hospital from his injuries.

“An investigation to establish the circumstances is ongoing, and the Collision Investigation Unit is appealing to anyone who may have any information which may assist.”

Police are asking anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and who may have captured anything on dash-cam or mobile phone footage, to get in touch.

According to PSNI statistics there were 68 deaths on the roads in Northern Ireland in 2024 compared to a total of 71 deaths in 2023.

In 2022 55 people lost their lives as a result of road traffic collisions.
