Gardai, including several armed units, were deployed in what was described as a “large-scale response”.
The station was evacuated and shut down, with no trains moving in or out shortly after 6.20pm.
When the 15.05 Sligo commuter train pulled into the station, a male in his 50s was arrested. He is not alleged to have made any threat towards other passengers. He is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Gardai evacuated the station and carried out a security sweep of both the station and the train on which the man with the firearm was a passenger.
The station was shut down for close to an hour, leading to significant delays, with those evacuated including passengers on 18.50 Enterprise. It was due in Belfast at 20.58, but was expected to be 25 minutes late.
The Garda said it is aware of commentary online in relation to the incident, which the service said “contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news”.
“Once again, An Garda Síochána appeals to the public to independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps,” a spokesperson said. The misinformation was around the nationality of the suspect.
Irish Rail, in a post on X, warned of delays of more than 50 minutes after services were suspended at the request of gardai. The station was fully operational by 7.15pm.
