A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a major fire at a derelict building which used to house a nightclub in Limavady.

The fire broke out in the Catherine Street area of the Co Derry town yesterday evening, at the former Sweet nightclub.

The child was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and bailed pending further inquiries.

The PSNI said the fire was reported to shortly before 5.55pm.

“Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), who were already in attendance brought the fire under control.

“Thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries and the incident is being treated as deliberate ignition at this time.”

The police service added: “A 12-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and bailed pending further inquiries.

“Catherine Street remains closed with diversions in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

NI Fire and Rescue Service group commander Geoff Somerville told the Irish News last night that the fire had spread to affect three derelict buildings in total.

Eight fire appliances were called to the scene along with an aerial appliance and a command support unit.
