A UVF mural near Lurgan Park that emerged a week ago and was condemned as an attempt to “intimidate”, has been paint bombed.
Alliance councillor Peter Lavery said the mural in the Avenue Road area of the Co Armagh town was a “clear attempt to mark territory and intimidate”.
Red paint was daubed on the mural, with the PSNI investigating both the appearance of the mural and the subsequent vandalism.
Featuring a small ‘1912′ below the UVF initials, which refers to the initial anti-home rule militia led by Edward Carson, the display also features the words ‘Mid Ulster Brigade’ to refer to the modern loyalist paramilitary group.
The notorious group is linked to sectarian murders as well as the Dublin and Monaghan bombings of 1974.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Lurgan Neighbourhood Policing Team officers have been, and will continue, engaging with community representatives and partner agencies.
“Anyone who has any information is asked to contact 101 or report to police online.”
Last week, Mr Lavery commented: “This is not history or culture, instead is a clear attempt to mark territory and intimidate.
“The community in Lurgan wants to be left in peace so they can get on with their lives. This sinister attempt to try to bring fear into the area will not deter people from continuing to progress towards a more positive future.”
