A 21-year-old man is due to appear in court charged with arson with intent to endanger life following a fire in Co Tyrone which left four people in hospital, including two children.

The man is due before Strabane Magistrates Court on Thursday in connection with the fire at the house in Dungannon on Monday evening.

A 15-year-old, also arrested on suspicion of arson, was released on bail as police carry out further enquiries.

Two adults, a 70-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, remain in hospital in a serious condition. The two children, aged seven and 10, are described as stable.

Eight police officers who helped rescue those inside the house on Cunninghams Lane were taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. They were all released in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, District Commander, Superintendent Peter Stevenson said: “Our colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service contacted us just after 8.30pm to advise that they were turning out to a report of a house fire with children trapped.

“Officers immediately made their way to the scene, arriving prior to Fire Service colleagues.

“The property was seen to be well alight, and as such, knowing that the residents were still inside, officers obtained ladders from neighbouring properties and used them to rescue four people.”

A fifth person, the 21-year-old due in court, was found on the roof and brought to safety, Supt Stevenson said.

Abdul Alim, the landlord of the property, said he rushed to the scene after receiving a phone call from a neighbour to tell him the house was on fire.

“It was awful, terrifying,” he said.

“They are tenants of mine, they have lived here for a long time, they are good tenants, they are good people.”

The family, originally from Portugal, were in the property when the fire was started around 8.30pm, with neighbours describing how they heard “roaring and shouting” from the scene.

Video footage shared on social media showed a screaming child at an upstairs window as the front door is engulfed in flames.
