A man in his 20s is in hospital with ‘serious’ injuries to his head and face after being assaulted in Newry in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police believe a group of three men were involved in the incident, which occurred in the Monaghan Street area at around 2.30am.

“Enquiries are continuing today, and we want to hear from anyone who was in the area and noticed three men,” a spokesperson said.

”One of whom is described as wearing dark trousers, a dark t-shirt and a dark zip-up hoody which is light -coloured inside.

”The men are understood to have made off on foot in the direction of the bus depot.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time that may have witnessed the assault to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 208 15/1
