Man charged with causing death by dangerous driving after pensioner dies in Fermanagh hit-and-run crash

A-70-year-old man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, following the death of motorcyclist Richard Maze (70) in a road traffic collision on the Boa Island Road in Beleek, Co Fermanagh.

The crash happened on Thursday afternoon, September 19.

According to the PSNI, Mr Maze had been riding a motorcycle when there was a collision with a car that failed to stop and he died at the scene.

The man also face charges of failing to remain where accident occurred causing injury, failing to report an accident whereby injury was caused and failing to stop where accident occurred causing injury.

He is due to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, October 14. As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The Boa Island Road has since reopened following the fatal hit-and-run road traffic collision.

A police spokesperson said officers received a report of a serious collision on the Boa Island Road at approximately 2.55pm on Thursday.

“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from other emergency services who provided first aid to the man, who was 70-year-old Richard Maze. However, he sadly died at the scene from his injuries,” they said.

“Richard was the rider of a motorcycle that was in collision with a dark-coloured car that failed to stop.”

They added: “Police have since arrested a 70-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the investigation.

“He remains in custody at this time as inquiries continue into exactly what happened.”

Police have appealed to anyone who was on the Boa Island Road between approximately 2.30pm and 2.45pm and witnessed the collision, or who may have captured dashcam footage of it, to contact police on 101, and quote reference 922 19/09/24.
