A number of schools have closed today after overnight snowfall, as icy conditions continue to impact roads on Tuesday morning and a new weather warning has been issued for snow and ice.

The Met Office has issued a new yellow warning from 3pm on Tuesday until 12pm on Wednesday, while a previous alert remains in place until 11am on Tuesday.

The forecaster says rain and sleet will continue to impact coastal areas while snow showers are to be expected inland from Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Overnight, showers should become confined to coastal areas. With winds easing, it is likely to be a much colder night than last night, bringing widespread frost and icy patches,” the Met Office said.

A road traffic incident is reported to have taken place on the M22 Junction 1 Northbound on Tuesday morning, with drivers being asked to prepare to stop and give way until cleared.

“Stopping distances increase greatly when weather conditions are poor, so slow down and leave a bigger gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front,” a police spokesperson said.

On Monday evening, ‘treacherous’ conditions on the roads resulted in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Frosses Road between Ballymena and Ballymoney.

Snow on the Coleraine Mountain had also left a number of vehicles stuck for a period of time before reopening after 9pm.

Wintery conditions are expected to remain throughout the remainder of the week before temperatures pick up at the weekend.
