Thousands of people turned out to pro-Palestine rallies in Belfast and Derry on Saturday ahead of the beginning of a ceasefire in Gaza on Sunday.

A long-awaited ceasefire came into force on Sunday after tens of thousands of people have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas since October 2022.

A demonstration organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign from Writers Square in Belfast to BBC House was branded a “March against BBC Silence” over the broadcaster’s coverage of the conflict.

Around a thousand people attended a separate rally in Derry on Saturday.

Palestinian woman Majida Al Askri said 32 of her relatives have died since the war in Gaza began.

Speaking to the BBC at the Derry demonstration, she said: “We are living in hope that the ceasefire will last and be in place forever.”

The first three Israeli female hostages captured by Hamas are expected to be freed on Sunday, while displaced Palestinians are beginning to return to cities they had fled earlier during the conflict.
