Three arrested in murder probe after death of man (50) in Newtownards

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 50-year-old man in Newtownards.

The trio - two women aged 58 and 33, and a 36-year-old male - were detained after the man was found unconscious at a property in the West Street area of the town shortly before 1.50am on Thursday morning.

He was taken to hospital where he later died.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The two women were detained at the scene following the arrival of police, while the male was later arrested at a nearby address.

All three have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in police custody on Thursday evening.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team, said:

“Our investigation is at a very early stage and we are working to establish the full circumstances around this deplorable incident.

”Cordons remain in place and local residents will see a visible police presence in the area.

“Of course, it’s particularly shocking that this should happen at Christmas and we know that the thoughts of our community will be with this man’s family and friends today.”

He added: ”I am appealing to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist with our investigation to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 98 of 26/12/24.”

Newtownards Alliance Party councilor Alan McDowell said: “This is deeply concerning, and my sympathies are with the the family of the deceased. I would also urge anyone who can assist police in their investigation to contact them as son as possible.”
