RORY McIlroy made a big move at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut on Friday but will rue a late double-bogey which halted his progress and leaves him seven shots off the lead.

The world number three, who carded an opening two-under 68 on Thursday, picked up eight birdies in his first 16 holes to move to 10 under for the tournament and within two shots of the lead, but a five at the par-three 17th hole proved costly, dropping him back to eight under.

The clubhouse lead was held by Denny McCarthy, who added a 65 to his first-round 60 to move to 15 under par, four clear of the field.
