MARK Allen’s winning run at the BetVictor English Open in Brentwood was ended on Friday when he lost 5-2 to Chris Wakelin in the quarter-finals.

The Antrim man had shown his best form of the season by winning three matches to set up the clash with last year’s BetVictor Northern Ireland Open finalist. He was fancied to progress further against the world number 24 but was outplayed after winning the first frame.

Breaks of 52 and 64 helped the Englishman to a 4-1 lead and although Allen reduced the deficit with a break of 58, a run of 60 wrapped up the win for Wakelin, who now plays Neil Robertson, 5-1 winner over Barry Hawkins in the evening

World number one Judd Trump also bowed out, losing 5-3 to Wu Yize of China. He now faces outsider Ishpreet Singh Chadha of India who beat four-times world champion Mark Selby 5-4
