Derry City defender Cameron McJannet looks set to join EFL League Two side Grimsby Town next month.
The 25-year-old centre-back is expected to travel to Blundell Park on Friday to discuss personnel terms and complete a medical, as the Mariners agreed a fee with Derry earlier this week.
The Englishman won’t be able to officially complete his move until the transfer window opens in a few weeks time.
McJannet, who is the Brandywell club’s vice-captain, hasn’t featured much since having a torrid time at champions Shamrock Rovers last month, however, his expected departure will certainly mean that manager Ruaidhrí Higgins will go into the transfer market to get a replacement.
The Derry gaffer stated this week at his pre-match press conference that he was looking to strengthen his dressing room during the July transfer window.
“There’s nothing much to say at the minute, so once there is and if there is we’ll let you know,” stated Higgins.
“It’s a very difficult window though, it’s a difficult window to strengthen your squad and you have to look outside the box a wee bit so there’s nothing imminent that’s for sure but you’re always looking as a manager and as coaching staff, it’s our jobs we’re always looking to try and improve the squad.
“If we can do that we’ll do it but if we can’t we know we’ve really good players here who are capable of winning a lot of matches.”
McJannet, who really was Mr Versatile during his time on Foyleside, played in a number of positions since joining the Candystripes in the summer of 2020.
The Milton Keynes native has become a Brandywell fans favourite and became a mainstay in the Derry back-line the minute he made his debut away at Drogheda United in August 2020.
McJannet, who memorably scored two goals against Shelbourne in the 2022 FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium, has played in a variety of roles over the past few seasons, in which he has made 142 appearances in all competitions and he has also scored crucial goals along the way, scoring 11 in total.
Grimsby Town just avoided the automatic relegation spots last season after finishing in 21st place in League Two, but David Artell will be hoping his side can have a better 2024-25 campaign.
