Davey Todd shrugged off the disappointment of being edged out of both of Saturday’s Superbike races by record-breaking Glenn Irwin by coming out on top in the Tides Restaurant Supersport race and the CP Hire Superstock race. These successes for the Englishman added to his victory in Thursday evening’s Superstock contest meaning he will go home with three titles in his luggage.
His Supersport success came after a tight battle with Richard Cooper on his Russell Racing BPE Yamaha with Mike Brown and Michael Dunlop also having solid outings. Those two had stuck with Todd and Cooper early in the race before the eventual top two pulled away around the halfway point of the race. Eventually, Yorkshireman Todd finished 0.462 seconds ahead at the front while Dunlop completed the podium 0.3 seconds further back of Cooper.
In his second Superstock victory of the week, Todd saw off stiff competition from Peter Hickman and James Hillier. Dean Harrison was also fighting for a podium spot before he retired which left Hillier and John McGuinness battling for third spot. 52 year-old veteran McGuinness first competed in the North West 200 all of 30 years ago and received a huge cheer as he beat out Hiller to that third spot.
While Hickman had been pipped to the post by Todd’s Milwaukee BMW in the Superstock race, he dominated the Supertwin class on his Swan Racing Yamaha as he was first past the finish line in both the Milltown Service Station and JM Paterson races.
On both occasions it was the afore-mentioned Richard Cooper who again came second after a pair of wonderful battles around the famous circuit. In the former of the two, Cooper’s Jack Reid Cars KMR Kawasaki was just 0.489 seconds behind Hickman with Mike Browne securing a first ever North West 200 podium in third while the latter was a see-saw affair that saw Hickman go up the inside of Cooper at Metropole on the final lap with Jeremy McWilliams nabbing third.
A wonderful week of road racing was capped by the awards ceremony that, unsurprisingly saw Glenn Irwin win the Robert Dunlop Trophy for Man of the Meeting. The Around a Pound top newcomer went to South Africa’s Allann-Jon Venter with Erno Kostamo of Finland securing the Ramore Restaurant Best Overseas rider. The Station Bar Best Team trophy went to Milwaukee BMW while Peter Hickman was awarded the Domino’s Pizza Spirit of the North West 200 award.
